Can I contribute to whale shark research?
Yes! Contributing to on-going research of whale shark migration, life span, and behavour is simple. You need a camera and an encounter with a whale shark!
The ECOCEAN Whale Shark Photo Identification Library is a visual database of whale shark encounters and of individually catalogued whale sharks. The library is maintained and used by marine biologists to collect and analyse whale shark encounter data to learn more about these amazing creatures.
The real exciting thing about photo identification is that anyone who has a camera and is lucky enough to have a whale shark encounter can contribute and the more people who contribute the more successful the project will be! You can help by submitting photos and sighting information.
The project aims to promote conservation research by bringing together divers and researchers and sharing information. By submitting your photographs of whale sharks researchers hope to match your images with their research. This will reveal the, as yet poorly known, distribution and migration routes of this species.
If you are lucky enough to encounter a whale shark and you have a camera with you then try and photograph the following areas of the whale shark. Use the pictures below as a guide and note that left and right hand sides of the whale shark have different spot patterns.
Once you have your pictures you can visit the Shark Trust, Whale Shark Project to submit some information about your whale shark encounter and submit your photo.
